    Mishimoto Subaru WRX Aluminum Coolant Expansion Tank

    Last year we released an aluminum expansion tank for the 2004-2014 STI and 2002-2007 WRX. We received a ton of awesome feedback from customers and enthusiasts regarding this component, as well as recommendations to produce such a tank for 2008-2014 WRX owners.

    While we normally highlight our development process in multiple installments, for this Expansion Tank we wanted to give you everything in one quick shot.

    Although we don't see quite as many failures with the 2008-2014 expansion tank, we can assume it will incur some wear over time. This tank sits relatively close to a very hot turbocharger/exhaust and handles coolant with temperatures

    After solidifying our product design we needed to capture data to verify the design and determine if any changes were necessary. We strapped our test vehicle to the dyno and began making pulls!     Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S Performance Air Intake

    We left off last time with an explanation of our intentions with this intake system and some initial design work to create an induction route to our planned airbox. Now it was time to finish designing this intake system so that testing could be conducted.

    Airbox Fabrication

    We started developing our airbox with simple metal fabrication. The plan was to put our idea into a physical object and then transfer this to a 3D model. Once in Solidworks, we could solidify the final design and features and use our 3D printer to construct a final prototype for test fitting.

    Fabrication begins! A simple box was drawn up and templates printed for our bends and mounting point locations.

    Mishimoto Subaru WRX Performance Top-Mount Intercooler and Charge-Pipe System

    As noted in our previous post, we decided to design a shroud that would channel airflow more efficiently through the core of our intercooler. Because our cooler features a larger footprint, the stock air shroud directs flow to only a portion of the core. Opening up this airflow to the entire core should result in even greater temperature reductions than we saw during our first round of testing.

    Another Intake?

    Wait " Mishimoto already has an intake for the BRZ/FR-S. Why design a second one? As this question crosses your mind, we can provide a simple explanation.

    We have had great success with our existing cold-air intake system for this chassis, and the feedback from our customer base has been fantastic.

    After listening to our customers both directly and through web forums, we concluded that a second intake design was necessary for a completely different set of customers. Here are a few plans for our new design.

    • Engine-bay mounted, stock-appearing airbox setup
    • Easy installation and filter servicing

    Time for the fun part of development, product testing! Since this is an intercooler, we would certainly need to put the WRX on the dyno for some pulls and data collection. It would be interesting to see how the installation of a front-mount system has an impact on turbo spool, intake temperatures, and perhaps even power output.

    Testing Preparation

    The first step toward data collection is to prepare our sensor bungs and install our pressure and temperature sensors. We installed our bungs within the inlet and outlet intercooler couplers.

    After completing the fabrication of our brackets for this kit and assembling the STI-specific lines, it was time to tackle the WRX. As you may be aware, the stock CCV lines are slightly different on the WRX, which necessitates a separate set of WRX-specific catch can lines.

    After reaching out to local contacts, we found a willing vehicle donor just one state away. We have borrowed this particular vehicle on several occasions for a variety of test fittings.     Dyno Preparation

    Time to finally answer the question we have been discussing for months. Would the 2015 WRX benefit from an upgraded intercooler?

    To test both the stock unit and the Mishimoto prototype unit, we would need to drill and tap the coolers to accept our temperature and pressure sensors.

    First, we installed a sensor bung in our silicone throttle-body hose. This would capture post intercooler data for all three coolers.
