The bracketing would be split into several components and the coolers mounted in a V format. The diverter in the middle of the coolers would prevent airflow escaping between the cores and direct it through the heat exchangers. Oil flow would enter through one cooler, move to the next, and then exit back toward the engine. Check out some 3D images below of the fittings that we needed for this kit.

Now that we had our renderings, a real prototype was worked up, and we needed to find a vehicle for test fitting and data collection. We used our local contacts to source a 2010 GSR model that fit the bill perfectly.

If you have not kept up with Mishimoto's new line of direct-fit oil coolers, you will be surprised to see that we are working on developing a kit for any vehicle we find that has a general need for reduced temperatures. A majority of our selections are enthusiast vehicles, which we know are being driven on the track and pushed hard on a regular basis. Oil temperature regulation will help reduce engine wear and is key to ensuring that your bearings are properly lubricated. I am sure you already know that! As oil heats up it begins to lose its viscosity, and at a certain point it becomes essentially useless for both temperature reduction and lubrication.

Stock Evolutions are having some issues with temperature, but we have seen even more problems with increased temperatures on modified vehicles. With the ease of pulling power out of the

And we are back! Enough drooling over our large core, cast tanks, and slick powder-coated finish. It was time to put these coolers to work. If you recall from the previous post, our fantastic engineer Steve is the proud owner of the super clean Evolution 9 you see below. Steve agreed to donate his vehicle for testing, which eliminated the process of tracking down a local Evo that would fit our requirements.

Mishimoto Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 7/8/9 Race Intercooler

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution ticks all the necessary boxes to make it a legendary and unforgettable sedan that continues to be competitive on and off the tarmac. Mitsubishi has always had a way of triggering the enthusiast in their consumers, by producing unique vehicles for people who are looking for more than typical transportation. I spent a fair amount of my youth drooling over the body lines of Starquests, the immense power of DSMs, and the absolutely ridiculous 3000GT VR4. The Evo really was the compilation of everything great about Mitsubishi. For these unique vehicles oozing with character, we can only thank Mitsubishi and plead for its return to vehicle design based more on insanity and spirit, and less on the general consumer's needs!

Although the Lancer Evolution 7/8/9 was released over a decade ago, it is still a popular

After a successful run of testing with a stock vehicle, we were in the market for a higher-powered Evo to check performance with higher boost pressures and added heat. After scouring the forums and checking with locals we were able to locate this 2010 GSR model with a nice set of modifications!

    • Equal-length exhaust manifold
    • External wastegate
    • Aftermarket 4" thick intercooler

Once again we tested both core compositions as well as the intercooler currently installed on the Evo. We collected some baseline information first with the aftermarket 4" cooler installed. We saw power numbers at 410 hp / 340 tq in the vehicle's

Now that we had a prototype, we would be determining if any initial points of modification could enhance performance. First we looked at the core composition and were very pleased with it. We received a couple different cores with varying fin pitches and bar heights. We would be testing each of these cores to see how the changes affect power output. Check out the images below for a look through the end tank!

Our team was immediately concerned with the thickness of the castings for the inlet/outlet. We were focused on creating a heavy-duty product that could withstand anything thrown at it, so these end tanks were cast fairly thick for durability and boost tolerance. Because of this thickness, the inlet and outlet lost

Mishimoto Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Performance Intercooler

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution continues to live up to its reputation as an ideal vehicle for the street, track, and rally course. Years of rally pedigree, a turbocharged inline 4-cylinder, and an AWD system that provides grip on any surface have all solidified its place as an illustrious and desired vehicle. Mishimoto is a fan of the Evolution as can be seen by our large line of Evo products, from the 4-chassis to the 10-chassis, including intercoolers, radiators, silicone coolant hoses, fan shrouds, and much more. Currently, we offer an intercooler for the Evolution X. Why would Mishimoto be developing another intercooler? The answer to this is simple. Our current product is suitable for stock and moderate bolt-on vehicles. Evo X owners are taking these vehicles to higher and higher power levels, and we needed a cooler that

With our design essentially solidified, and our prototypes ready to be put into action, it was time to perform another test fit and gather data. Lucky for us, one of our new engineers (Steve) happens to daily drive an Evo 9, and we talked him into allowing us to use his car for development. Steve's Evo is making around 350 hp to the wheels with a few modifications and quite a helping of boost. This should be a great vehicle for our second round of testing.

It is hard to argue with the masses who rave about the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. A turbocharged, AWD, rally-inspired chassis wrapped in a tastefully designed and aggressive body is enough to provoke envy in anyone, enthusiast or not.

During the past few years, we’ve kept a close eye on the Evolution forums and enthusiast groups, and we’ve also kept tabs on the success of our current products, including oil coolers, intercoolers, radiators, and silicone hose kits. In doing so we have become aware of the needs and wants for products that would make the lives of our customers easier. We found an interesting project that needed support – a half-size radiator for enthusiasts who bolt in large-frame, twin-scroll, and front-facing turbocharger setups. This isn’t a modification you will see on a regular
