High Road – 2021+ Ford Bronco 2.3L/2.7L Performance Intercooler R&D, Part 4 – Bracketry Production Sample

While it might not seem like it, any excursion in the Bronco is a team effort. From the driver’s seat, you’re just manipulating the throttle and steering while generally making smart decisions, but the brigade of electronics, sensors, and hardware supporting the EcoBoost powertrain strapped to this modern off-roading chassis all work in perfect harmony to go over any terrain. Teamwork is, in fact, making the dream work. The same could be said regarding the Bronco’s intercooler re-homing process. Our fresh high-mount intercooler design might be the show’s star, but it turns into a fancy paperweight without its literal supporting cast.

Under Armored – 2017+ Ford Raptor Borne Off-Road Skid Plates

The Ford Raptor is the embodiment of go anywhere, do anything machines. The broad haunches and aggressive look deliver a commanding presence on the road, with the towering tires and amped-up suspension ready to take control once the pavement runs out. Unfortunately, while these ferocious dune-crushing monsters are generally well prepared for anything the trail can throw at it, these Raptors still have a crippling weakness – their soft underbelly.

Being a purpose-built off-roader, Ford didn’t leave the delicate bits under the Raptor completely unguarded. At a cursory glance, it looks like this truck is already well protected. The angled front engine skid plate contributes to its rugged visage, but things start to thin out the more we venture underneath the truck.

Underhood, Undercover– 2022+ Subaru WRX Underhood Panels – Pulley Cover

There’s more to performance than speed. Sure, we enthusiasts are aiming for the optimal cornering or reducing the 0-60 time, but we want more. These speed machines obviously need to look good while sweeping through corners or hard parked at the local cars and coffee. When it comes to aesthetic performance, there’s something to be said about a vehicle’s ability to elicit wide eyes and dropped jaws. These VB WRXs came underrated in ‘wow-power’ from the factory, but we have a plan to rectify this.

Greatest Hits – 2023+ Nissan Z Baffled Oil Catch Can R&D, Part 2, Prototyping

Instant classics don’t typically happen instantly. Think about all of those songs that immediately get stuck in your head. Instead, these earworms wriggle their way into your unconscious because they’re so expertly crafted. They’re demoed, recorded, have their composition changed, re-recorded, and rigorously dissected before they make their way to your Spotify playlists. Nissan’s Z cars follow a similar path. While the Z hasn’t been singing the same song for the last 53 years, it’s become a staple in the genre. Now, half a century later, these sports coupes have built quite the legacy and are preserving their heritage in their latest release that captures the Z’s essence. We’re super fans here at Mishimoto, and we’re hard at work preserving that legacy.

This Z is a rockstar, thanks to the VR30DDTT nestled under the hood, and we want to give it the VIP treatment. Protecting this engine’s intake tract from the dangers of blow-by is a song that we already know, but this time around,

Greatest Hits – 2023+ Nissan Z Baffled Oil Catch Can R&D, Part 1 – Design Plans

It’s almost 2023, and Nissan’s latest sports coupe carrying on the legendary Z lineage is finally here. Like every other enthusiast, we let out an exasperated “Finally…” hearing the news of dealer allocations. It’s been 13 years since we had a new Z car, and while the 370 certainly held the namesake in a strong standing, it was about time for a new era of Z before charging into the electrifying future. This Z might be the shining beacon of fresh sports car design, but Nissan’s latest offering is a compilation of their greatest hits. There are, of course, the classics, like the 300ZX taillights, signature silhouette, and hood cowl dating back to their Datsun days, but one of the main draws is the recent B-side that’s under the hood, a little ditty called the VR30DDTT. In this case, it’s a cover, but the Z made this tune its own with 400hp and, much to the superfan’s joy, a manual transmission option. Unfortunately, this heavy-hitting power ballad of an engine still falls under the same trope

  6. Honing the Blade – 2016+ Polaris RZR XP Turbo Performance Intercooler R&D, Part 3- Production Sample

Honing the Blade – 2016+ Polaris RZR XP Turbo Performance Intercooler R&D, Part 3- Production Sample

Blades dull and lose their utility the more they’re used, and the same could be said about Polaris’s flagship side-by-side bearing the RZR name. This specialized tool is designed to slice its way through tough terrain with ease, but it needs the proper tool to maintain its sharpness over time. The torquey turbocharged twin makes this side-by-side a formidable weapon, but its intercooler is the chink in its armor. Well, until now.

As mentioned in our first post,

Honing the Blade – 2016-2021 Polaris RZR XP Turbo Performance Intercooler R&D, Part 2 – Prototyping

It takes more than just a whetstone to sharpen a blade properly. Perfecting the edge on any cutting implement comes with the collection of the correct tools on top of sharpening the technique required for an adequately honed blade. However, the Polaris RZR Turbo isn’t just some run-of-the-mill knife. This is an implement designed for precision cuts through the unforgiving wilderness, so naturally, honing this blade requires special care.

Preparation is a critical step in any tool maintenance. In the case of keeping our RZR sharp, our preparation was outlined in our design plans in the previous post, so we’re moving on to honing our technique. While our modeling software combined with our 3d scan arm provide an accurate virtual workspace for our engineering team, nothing quite tops a physical installation on the vehicle. With the help of our bank of 3D printers, Dave is able to churn out a 1-to-1 scale replica of the new design that is fit for installation.

  8. Honing the Blade - 2016+ Polaris RZR XP Turbo Performance Intercooler R&D, Part 1 - Stock Review and Design Plans

Honing the Blade - 2016+ Polaris RZR XP Turbo Performance Intercooler R&D, Part 1 - Stock Review and Design Plans

Much like the sharpened blade that it takes its name from, Polaris's RZR is a purpose-built tool designed specifically for making precise cuts through the rugged wilderness. The 925cc torquey twin paired with forced induction, knobby tires, and long-travel suspension, all placed neatly in a fun-sized chassis makes this side-by-side the ideal specialty tool for off-the-grid excursions. Much like an actual razor, though, this machine needs constant honing to retain its sharp performance, and in this case, our whetstone is the intercooler.

The OEM intercooler is one aspect of this rugged rig that can dull the performance of your turbocharged RZR. Of course, it's not necessarily in terms of cooling power. Still, the high demand for this vehicle across treacherous terrain knocks this intercooler around enough, which can lead to cracks and leaks in the charged air or, worse, the coolant running through the core.

For any community, the wants and needs of the enthusiast essentially boil down to style and speed. These Broncos already roll off the assembly line looking the part, but, let's face it, we all want that extra grunt under the hood, no matter the reason. These Off-roaders weren't exactly designed for speed, but some extra ponies added to the pack only make the Bronco more capable when the trail gets treacherous. One of the best stepping stones on the quest for additional power out of your rig comes from an intercooler upgrade. While the 2.7L powered Broncos are packing more of a punch than their four-cylinder 2.3L counterpart, they both share this same key to that sequestered power potential, and now we'll see what the 2.7L has hidden away.

To unveil the 2.7L Bronco's hidden performance, we're

Functionally Wild - 2021+ Ford Bronco 2.7L Performance Intercooler Piping R&D, Part 2 - Prototyping

Plotting courses is a significant part of a life off-road. While these Broncos are designed to take on any spontaneous adventure and leave the asphalt behind, knowing your path home is a vital part of any journey, no matter what vehicle you're piloting. Like mapping these off-road excursions, the quest of packing more ponies into the 2.7L EcoBoost is a long and sometimes complex. Upgrading the intercooler piping is one of the vital legs of the journey, but Ford's layout can leave some aimlessly wandering this part of the wilderness. Not us, though. In our last post, we found our way through the jungle under the Bronco's hood, and now we're plotting the course.
