Keep the Good Times Rolling - Direct-Fit Catch Can R&D, Part 1 - Concept and Prototype

Hyundai may have never been a brand synonymous with producing the driver's car. Their models are often used as some sort of punchline to illustrate what we gearheads don't want in our cars. There have been some contenders throughout the years to ward off the bad jokes, but the quirky, asymmetrical Veloster that followed the Genesis earns the most credit for injecting new energy into Hyundai's image. Its release had us all thinking that the real spirited driving experience finally made its way to the well-known manufacturer.

While the Genesis Coupe might be a piece of Hyundai History now, the Veloster continues to deliver the sporty flair to the car maker's lineup.

Procrastinating Extinction - 2022+ Subaru WRX Baffled Oil Catch Can R&D, Part 1 - Concept and Design Plans

The days of the internal combustion engine are numbered. That's not much of a surprise given the impending electrified takeover, but keeping our precious gas burning, manual shifting, turbocharged machines in proper working order is that much more important. The trouble is that the VB WRX's main nemesis is itself, or at least the by-product of its operation. Like every WRX before this one and fossil fuel-powered engine to hit the streets, blow-by and carbon build-up lurk in the vehicle's intake tract. Not to worry, though. We're already on the case to preserve the WRX's power plant.

If you're scratching your head at the notorious boogyman that is blow-by and how to prevent this monster from attacking your WRX, let's review. Any internal combustion engine operates by using thousands of tiny explosions to drive the piston to the bottom of the cylinder. This process turns the crankshaft, generating the power to propel you down the highway. The downside is that not all of the combustion

True Heart - 2021+ Ford Bronco 2.3L Baffled Oil Catch Can Kit R&D, Part 2 - Testing Results

The 2.3L EcoBoost is a mainstay in Ford's engine arsenal, which really shouldn't come as much of a surprise either. The heavy-hitting four-cylinder made a huge splash in the hottest of hatchbacks in 2016 that through every other segment of Ford's lineup. So it's no wonder that this powerplant found a new home under the hood of the resurrected off-roader, offering the best of both worlds in terms of performance and efficiency, but the Bronco only reaps these rewards as long as the intake tract stays clean. Luckily, we already have a solution for that.

When we last left off, our prototype catch can kit was installed on our Bronco as it headed out the door for our preliminary testing. It takes some time to accrue the proper mileage for our test, so, in the meantime, our engineer, Dave, put the finishing touches on our kit's design, starting with the bracket.

TrendSetter - Baffled Oil Catch Can R&D, Part 2 - Production Sample and Test Results

Subaru designed the Crosstrek for daily practicality while always being on standby for adventure. Our donor Crosstrek did just that, adventuring and making short work of our 1000-mile test period. Before we look at the blow-by collection, let's take a look at the final kit.

The bracket is the star of the show in this kit. We design our catch can kits for a form fit into your vehicle, and that's due to our bracket design. Thanks to the open real estate under the hood of the compact crossover, our engineering team was able to keep things simple in terms of design. Our bracket design features 3mm thick steel, specifically designed to mount directly to the firewall. This gives us prime access to the PCV port to link our can.

When it comes to tying in our catch can,

Prepare for Adventure - Catch Can R&D, Part 1: Stock Review

"What's the point?" A question commonly asked by those who see cars and trucks solely as a means to get from point A to point B, from where they are to where they want to be. Those people look at a Ferrari and a Camry the same way. There are speed limits and traffic, so what's the point of having a fast car? They look at off-road capable vehicles and ask, "What's the point?" We have roads and highways that get you wherever you need to go, why would you ever want to leave them? What those people miss, however, is that with the right vehicle, every inch of Earth is your road, and any drive can be a journey. No vehicle better embodies that idea than the Jeep Wrangler.

The Luxury of Performance - Direct Fit Catch Can R&D, Part 2 - Testing Results

Picture this. The year is 2023. You're climbing into your 2016 Q50 on your standard commute to work. It's year seven with your trusty Infiniti, which has kept you riding in style to just about everywhere and still no complaints. Then again, who could have any gripes with the power-packed VR30DDTT and posh cabin as it brings you from point A to point B?

I could think of worse driver's seats to sit in for 7+ years.

You do notice, however, in the past few months that it might stumble a bit on startup. It's not returning the same fuel efficiency as it once did. The once mighty twin-turbo V6 in your Infiniti feels tired and not quite as peppy as it did the day you drove it off the dealer's lot. This sort of takes the luxury part out of sports luxury sedan and makes you wish that you headed off the inherent issue

Still a Class Act - Direct Fit Catch Can R&D, Part 2 - Production Sample and Test Results

Physical health is key for any athlete's performance. The same applies to anything mechanical, such as the Audi B9. Just as our bodies have defenses against sickness, the B9 S4 and S5 came equipped with a robust system to mitigate the effects of blow-by. However, as we went over in our last post, this separator might need some backup.

When we last left off, our in-house fabricated prototype made its way onto our donor S5 and was ready for our standard 1000-mile road test. This test provides us with a benchmark on the rate of blow-by collection while also being the final check against any dreaded check engine lights.

  10. Breathing Fresh Air - Intake R&D, Part 1: Stock Review

Breathing Fresh Air - Intake R&D, Part 1: Stock Review

There's something about hitting the road, leaving the smog and haze of the city, and breathing in the crisp, fresh air of the wilderness that brings a person to life. The Jeep Wrangler JL, like all Wranglers before it, was built to take you there. To let you escape those everyday boundaries and breathe fresh air. And for the JL equipped with the new 2.0L turbo engine, breathing fresh air is more important than ever.

While you're taking a deep breath in and enjoying the view, your Wrangler's two-liter engine is using that same air to drive you both forward. It breathes air in through its intake, compresses it with the turbocharger and even more in the cylinder, ignites it with fuel and a spark, then breathes out through its exhaust. In this never-ending cycle, air is as vital to your Jeep as it is to your lungs. And it all starts with the intake system.
