    It Takes Two! - Secondary Radiator R&D, Part 1: Factory Review and 3D Models

    Whether we're talking about turbochargers on an F-150 EcoBoost, V8 engines in an offshore powerboat, drummers in the Allman Brothers Band, or pieces of Carvel™ Ice Cream Cake for dessert on my birthday, sometimes two is a better option than one. This was very much the school of thought that Ford's engineers adopted when designing the cooling system on the 2011+ F-Series Super Duty trucks, including the F-350, F-450, and F-550. These trucks feature two systems that work in parallel to handle all of the cooling needs in your truck, and both are equally important.

    Some exciting developments are brewing in the world of induction hoses! We recently received into our R&D facility our first shipment of samples for the 2016+ Nissan Titan XD, and they are all looking great.

    Our tube's design is not overly complex, and it will be an awesome addition to the engine bay of this Cummins-powered Nissan. The design of the factory tube is interesting because of the type of bend it has. The orientation of the airbox opening does not have an even plane for a straight-through design that can just loop over to the throttle body. The opening angles out a bit, facing more in the direction of the truck's firewall. What results is an interesting

    Conquering the Catch Can - Catch Can R&D, Part 1: Initial Fabrication

    Here at Mishimoto, we know the importance of a good catch can as far as preventative maintenance goes. For most vehicles, installing a catch can means protecting your engine from the silent monster that is blow-by. Blow by can consist of excess oil, fuel, moisture, and pure evil. Engines with direct-injection, like our good friend the Titan XD, are prone to blow-by creeping its way back into the engine through the intake, and caking debris on valves which can be very harmful to an engine over time.     Our Titan XD has been poked and prodded, and the next upgrade we are working on is a DPF-back exhaust. Before we begin development, we like to take a peek at the stock version to determine which upgrades we can make to the design. Our first observation was that this exhaust is, well, plain. Not to worry; our goal is to spice up the design a bit to give this Titan more to show off.

    A Cooler Cummins - Intercooler R&D, Part 2: 3D Printing and Shroud Fabrication

    After evaluating the factory intercooler, our team was prepared to begin designing an intercooler with even more efficiency. The process started as a simple 3D model that included our primary mounting points. This model was then sent to the 3D printer for some rapid prototyping.

    Refining a Titan - Intercooler Pipe Kit R&D, Part 1: Stock Evaluation

    Over the last month we have been going all out on the Titan XD, and we are pleased to report our progress on the hot- and cold-side intercooler pipes. As with most development projects, we first examined the factory components in order to see how we might improve them. At first glance, the intercooler pipes appear to be your average factory aluminized steel pipes. Further inspection, however, revealed that these pipes were not in good condition. The hot-side pipe had a bit of oily film coating the inside and worse still, the cold-side pipe had a startling coating of rust. Yes, you read that right; the pipe that supplies cool air to this brand-new truck's turbo is coated with rust.

    Treat Your Transmission. Ford 6.0L Powerstroke Transmission Cooler R&D, Part 3: Testing Data

    It's now time to install our prototype and put some data behind the efficiency differences we expect to see between our cooler and the factory heat exchanger. We did add a substantial amount of core surface area, so we anticipate that heat transfer will improve during a load test. Check out this shot of the Mishimoto 6.0L transmission cooler installed!

    Testing Process

    We have numerous tools at our disposal to test heat exchangers. For this one, we will be using our Dynapack™ dynamometer. With a transmission cooler test, we want to apply some load on the vehicle to ensure that stress is created within the drivetrain.

    Recently, quite a few exciting development vehicles have arrived at our headquarters, but none received quite the same welcome as our Titan XD.

While the head of our Production Department was inside doing whatever it is you do when purchasing a new vehicle, the rest of Team Titan was wasting no time in revealing to the world the proud new owners of this Titan XD.

    Treat Your Transmission. Ford 6.0L Powerstroke Transmission Cooler R&D, Part 2: Mishimoto Prototype

    Now that we have designed our 6.0L transmission cooler prototype in SolidWorks®, our team has begun work on constructing our first prototype. We will be using this prototype to verify fitment on our truck and perform heat-soak testing to determine any cooling benefits provided by the larger core size.
