Meet our New and Improved Compact Catch Can

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." This colloquialism is a phrase we've all heard before. It translates to, "If it's still working, why put any effort into improving it?" But that doesn't sit well with us here at Mishimoto, especially when referring to keeping your engine running at peak efficiency. So with that in mind, it's time our tried-and-true compact catch can got a refresh, and we're stoked to show it off.

Since 2014, our compact catch can has been filtering out harmful blow-by from CCV systems around the world in its universal form and has starred in tons of direct-fit applications. It has a long service history, but we wanted to evolve it into something even more effective.

The old and new cans look just about the same

Close your eyes and picture an American pickup truck. You're probably imagining a Ford F-Series. And whether you know it or not, that F-Series you're picturing probably has a V8 under the hood. Like the F-Series itself, the Ford V8 is an icon of American automotive culture. Customers could have their iconic truck with an equally iconic V8 since the first F-Series truck was introduced in 1948. Over the years, the F-Series and the V8 powering it evolved. 42 years after the first F-series rolled off the assembly line, Ford introduced the Modular V8 that would power the F-150 for the next 28 years.

    Protecting your V8 Killer - 2011-2014 Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost Catch Can R&D Part 1 - Stock Review

As much as my car enthusiast-self hates to admit it, the days of the gas powered V8 are numbered. Even never owning a vehicle motorized by one of these monstrous power plants, it's a sad concept to wrap my head around. For decades, we've all relied on those eight cylinders for the necessity to haul heavy objects around, and for the sheer enjoyment of speed. For those of you in the business of the latter, you might find this to be foreboding, especially since one of the pioneers of popularizing the V8 is the one driving the final nail in the coffin. You heard correctly, I'm holding Ford responsible for taking one of the biggest steps against the eight cylinder engine. It's not necessarily a bad thing, however, since their EcoBoost engines are more than up to snuff to fill the shoes of the V8.

  5. The Luxury of Performance - Direct Fit Catch Can R&D, Part 1 - Concept and Design

The Luxury of Performance - Direct Fit Catch Can R&D, Part 1 - Concept and Design

Traditionally in the automotive world, luxury is defined by vehicles that come out of Germany. They set the mark at least. Nissan, however, has challenged the status quo with their Infiniti lineup, most recently with their Q50 and Q60. Where the BMW, Mercedes, and Audi are covered in a thick layer of dusty heritage, Infiniti has introduced a breath of fresh air into the sport luxury segment.

In other markets, the Q50 carries the notorious Skyline nomenclature, and where it's not quite on the level of the GT-R, it can certainly hold its own.

Gasoline direct injection (GDI) has existed for over 100 years. Since its introduction into the automotive industry in the early 1950's, GDI has had an off-and-on relationship with cars and trucks. Today, it looks like GDI is here to stay. With more and more manufacturers including GDI across their entire fleet of vehicles, we've seen massive strides in vehicle performance and efficiency. Combine those improvements in GDI with the increasing popularity of turbocharging and we're living in a time where small four- and six-cylinder engines are making more power than their eight-cylinder ancestors, all while using less fuel than some of the smallest engines of the past 50 years.

No technology is without its downfalls, however. GDI has come a long way in 50 years, with most of that innovation coming in the last 20 years. Like all technology, the exponential

Cool Your Charge! The 2015 WRX Front-Mount Intercooler Build, Part 4: Dyno Testing

Mishimoto Subaru WRX Front-Mount Intercooler Kit

Time for the fun part of development, product testing! Since this is an intercooler, we would certainly need to put the WRX on the dyno for some pulls and data collection. It would be interesting to see how the installation of a front-mount system has an impact on turbo spool, intake temperatures, and perhaps even power output.

    Testing Preparation

The first step toward data collection is to prepare our sensor bungs and install our pressure and temperature sensors. We installed our bungs within the inlet and outlet intercooler couplers.

True Heart - 2021+ Ford Bronco 2.3L Baffled Oil Catch Can R&D, Part 1 - Concept and Prototype

When manufacturers launch their new vehicle platforms, like the Bronco's highly anticipated return, it's often linked with the flagship engine option that makes it the "true version" of that vehicle. A second, much more budget-friendly powerplant option is often available but carries the stigma of being an imposter. When it comes to the Bronco, though, this couldn't be further from the case.

The 2.3L EcoBoost nestled under the hood might be two cylinders and one turbo short of the highfalutin 2.7L twin-turbo V6, but this buff four-banger was already good enough to dominate the mid-sized truck market by being the only engine option for the Ranger. The 270 horsepower and mighty 309 ft/lbs of torque matched with the mind-bending off-roading capabilities make this iteration

Heritage Revamped - Baffled Oil Catch can Kit R&D, Part 3 - Production Sample and Test Results

It's the end of a journey for our C8 Corvette catch can, both figuratively and literally. We've reached the end of our R&D process and completed over 1000 miles on our road test. Let's dive in and see where this journey has taken us.

As the saying goes, "it's not the destination, but rather the experiences gained along the way." For our C8 Corvette catch can kit, it's a little bit of both. If you remember the last post, our donor vehicle left the R&D facility sporting a matching set of our baffled oil catch cans; but if you scroll down, you'll notice one is missing now. The reason for the change comes down to our testing results.

Still a Class Act - Direct Fit Catch Can, Part 1 - Concept and Design

What does Philadelphia Eagles' safety Malcom Jenkins and the B9 Audi S5 have in common? More than you would think, actually. Both are hardened powerhouses of speed and power wrapped up in the soft touch of luxury. I'm not an expert on athleticism (not even close) but it's no secret that Mr. Jenkins has spent countless hours in the gym training to perform on the field, much like the engineers at Audi likely poured over the fine details of the 3.0T that sits under the S5's hood. Both parties also need to be in peak condition to exert themselves to their max over the long haul. Where sickness and injury would slow number 27 down, the illness of blow-by can slow down this mechanical athlete.

Mr. Jenkins takes the stylish athlete one step further. Where his athleticism is an asset to the
