    The Europeans have dominated the hot-hatchback market for decades. In fact, the term "hot hatchback" was coined to describe Volkswagen's Mk1 Golf GTI, which was responsible for the leadup to the hot-hatch fever throughout Europe and Asia. Just about every manufacturer began producing hatchbacks with stiff suspensions and a few extra horses under the hood. Even our very own Ford produced cars like the Escort Cosworth, and previous generations of the Focus ST and RS, but then left us here in the States, out to dry, when it came to having fun in a sub-compact. That was up until Mazda had their say.

    When we were 16, our cars were our tickets to freedom and endless possibilities. For many of us, those early days of driving were the basis for a lifetime of automotive passion.     Somewhere along the road from 16 to adulthood, we lost that sense of freedom. Room for friends has been replaced by space for the kids and their bikes. Gas mileage now supersedes a killer sound system in the hierarchy of features. "How comfortable will this be on my 45-minute stop-and-go commute," has taken the place of "Will my crush think I'm cool in this?"

    Breathing Fresh Air - Intake R&D, Part 3: Design

    We often say that engines are just air pumps. The more
    air you can get in and out of them, the more efficient they are, and the more
    power they make. While that's true for any engine at its core, computers and
    electronic controls tend to complicate the equation. As cars and trucks become
    more complex and efficient, the computers controlling them have a hand in
    almost every aspect of how they run. Most of those controls focus on how the
    engine breathes in through the intake and out through the exhaust.

    So, what does that mean for our 2018+ JL 2.0T intake? It
    means that "good enough" isn't an option. The sensors attached to the
    Hurricane's stock intake and its complex design require precision along every
    step of development. It may seem like we're dragging our feet by looking so
    closely at the stock intake, but every feature of every component plays a major
    role in how the intake functions.

    As the legendary namesakes in the automotive world live on, they are forced to evolve with the industry. That old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" doesn't exactly sit well with the Toyota and BMW tag team, especially when it came to the Supra's resurrection. Yes, there is no arguing that the 2JZ-GTE was (and still is) a powerhouse of an engine, but the B58 more than fills the shoes left vacant for the last 18 years. While the car evolves, the formula stays the same. Strong, punchy turbo, straight-six in the front sending all the power to the rear wheels, and a mod-crazy driver in the middle.

    Tank Love - Coolant Expansion Tank R&D, Part 1: Design Plans

    Anyone with a car older than 15 years or so likely has a coolant expansion tank with the structural integrity of wet toilet paper. These tanks rarely get aesthetic love in the factory vehicle design. They are usually plastic, look weird and can start cracking given enough time. After 20 years, the expansion tank in my 1995 Nissan 240SX project car will literally begin crumbling around your finger if any sort of pressure is applied. We don't want that happening to your RS/ST a decade or two from now, so we decided to design a sweet looking expansion tank that will outlast the car and be a nice addition to your engine bay.

    The stock cap is has a pressure limit of 21psi

    There's nothing quite like hearing the roar of an engine mixed with the whir of rollers spinning under your wheels, all while you watch the line on the graph climb.  Running a powerful car on a dynamometer (dyno) is the epitome of instant gratification for gear-heads.  Here at Mishimoto, we use our dynos on a daily basis.  From all-wheel-drive (AWD) hatchbacks, like the Ford Focus RS, to the high-horsepower, rear-wheel-drive Chevrolet Camaro SS,  and even trucks like the Nissan Titan XD. Almost every vehicle we bring in finds itself strapped (or bolted) down to a dyno at one point or another.

    Mishimoto Waterjet Enhancements

    Our shop contains many unique tools and equipment to help aid our R&D team in the process of product development and testing. One of our more recent acquisitions is a very nice Waterjet machine. We've used this device to cut airbox pieces, catch can brackets, shop signage, fan shrouds, and many other components that can be constructed from flat sheet material. This tool been helpful in speeding up development projects, and we've really enjoyed learning about its many features.

    Waterjet Basics

    Despite being compact in physical size, this radiator is a dual-pass unit with a very dense fin composition. Cooling efficiency is quite impressive from such a small footprint. Although pressure won't be absurdly high, this radiator has strengthened tubes that can withstand around 100 psi. In addition to these benefits, the connection points on this radiator feature a threaded female port to accept different size and style connections. We intend to use -16AN fittings

    Beat The Heat! Mishimoto Fiesta ST Intercooler R&D, Part 1: Big Plans for a Little Car

    We've discussed R&D for many of our typical product segments for the Fiesta ST. These include our in-progress aluminum radiator, our already released catch can kit and oil cooler solution, as well as our nearly complete intake system and exhaust components (both cat-back and downpipe). Our company is also known for its strong line of heat exchangers, so we certainly need to see what can be done about the undersized stock intercooler on the Fiesta.

    Heat is a big enemy of the Fiesta, as many have already discovered during track driving. High oil temperatures, high coolant temperatures, and a heat-soaked intercooler all commonly occur after short periods of aggressive driving. We've been actively tackling both the coolant and oil temperature concerns in other development threads, but now it's time to lower the intake temperatures with an upgraded intercooler.

    Western Expansion - Aluminum Expansion Tank R&D - Concept to Completion

    Just from looking at the Civic Type R, you can tell that it's built to perform. The exterior styling is aggressive, yet functional. Every grill, opening, and spoiler incorporated into the design is there for a purpose, and that purpose is speed. Even with the amount of legwork that went into making this Civic the cream of the crop, everyone is still after increased performance.

    When most think about the performance of any vehicle, they think of how fast they can make it. Dreams of tunes, intakes, intercoolers, and exhausts are what drift through every enthusiast's mind when it comes time to start modding. Performance should really come from the car's ability to keep performing every time you push the start button. Making sure all the components under the hood are doing their job is a good first step.
