The Mighty Horse: What Is Horsepower?

Audiation - the ability to listen to or play music in your head without physically hearing any of it.

Just by reading notes on a page of sheet music, talented musicians can hear the music in their minds. Truly gifted musicians can hear a relatively complex piece of music played once and then repeat it, perfectly, note for note, on their preferred instrument. That's talent. It's hard to teach that to just anyone. This is the concept of audiation.

I bring up this musical analogy to illustrate a point. These skills are engrained and conceptualized deep within their psyche and motor functions just as deep as breathing or walking. We, gearheads, have our own concepts that are as commonly used and seemingly simply as notes on a page. But how often do we think about what they really mean?

The First State's First Drift Event

To those of us who call drifting a passion, we know that there is something familiar about the hours before a drift event. It's a feeling that we know all too well. The last-minute push to get your car ready and load everything. Floor jack, tire pressure gauge, tires; everything. Most importantly, making sure your car is actually in the right condition to pass the track's technical inspection (tighten your lug nuts!). Once you're over the feeling of rushing to get yourself and the car ready, excitement overcomes you from then on. All that's left is to get to the track.

If you know the track that you're about to shred, you know exactly what you're in for. The layout, the paddock area, the people, the rules; all are familiar ground for you. You feel a sense of ease wash over you as you arrive. All of the long hours of preparation and traveling. The lack of sleep and the dwindling number that is your bank account. It all leads up to this. Every moment that has brought you here to this one,

When two independent entities combine their shared strengths with their individual specialties to produce something new, the result is often a product that embodies greatness of a magnitude even grander than that of the parties whence it came - just ask my parents (kidding, Mom and Dad!). Joking aside, we call this effect synergy, and here are a few renowned examples:

    • Peanut Butter and Jelly
    • Snoop and Dr. Dre
    • Disney and Pixar
    • Jobs and Wozniak
    • LS Motors and any chassis ever

You get the idea. Anyway, you might be wondering where I'm going with this (unless you were enterprising enough to read the title), but I am excited to share with you the newest addition to the above list of greats: Mishimoto is partnering up with Hoonigan to produce some products that are sure to be far more influential and ass-kicking than anything else by those listed above, and that includes Finding Nemo.

No, we are not making an autonomous, tire-shredding gymkhana vehicle (yet!).

Mishimoto Welcomes its Newest Pupil of Performance - The Focus RS

If you follow our Engineering Blog you have probably seen the exciting array of vehicles that come in and out of the Mishimoto garage for some R&D. The luckiest and most interesting of the bunch get to stay around as our SVP (Special Vehicle Project) cars. This means that upon arrival at our facility, they are evaluated from head to toe for a complete offering of Mishimoto parts from cooling to power products, we want to cover them all. The 2.0 Camaro was the last to be welcomed to our Engineering headquarters, but it wasn't the new kid on the block for long"

Mishimoto Silicone Induction Hose For Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S

Thanks for returning for the second portion of this build! As mentioned in the previous post, our team was prepared to conduct extensive testing on this induction hose. Our main goal with testing was to determine the particular combination of components that would provide the most power output. Power output collection would be via our Dynojet. Each combination of components received an average output based on three consecutive runs all completed on the same day with essentially similar conditions. The variations of testing are below.

    1. Resonator and noise amplifier both installed
    2. Resonator plugged with noise amplifier installed
    3. Resonator attached with noise amplifier disabled
    4. Resonator and noise amplifier both plugged

We would be testing each of these conditions with both the Mishimoto prototype induction hose and the factory induction

Mishimoto Silicone Induction Hose For Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S

The BRZ/FR-S is one of the hottest cars to hit the track in the past few years, and the Mishimoto engineers decided to do what they do best: cool it down. Naturally, we would be developing a performance aluminum radiator and silicone hose kit. Additionally we ended up with a killer direct-fit oil cooler kit, some very slick oil caps, and a low-temperature thermostat. As you may have seen in our other build-log, we are also developing a performance cold air intake, which we estimate will provide a nice increase in power and really bring out some of the engine tones being baffled by the factory system. This article is not about the full intake system we have planned. It's about the silicone induction hose we developed in the mix with all the products listed above.

Somehow, this very unique and valuable product got lost in the mix of

We know you've been dying to know how we finish up creating a cold-air intake, and today is the day you can breathe a sigh of relief. We are finally at the last stage of R&D! After constructing a final prototype we were prepared to test fitment and ensure that power output and AFR readings remained unchanged. Check out our final prototype components!

The pipes turned out great for this intake! The CNC-machined MAF mount and air straightener are spot-on, and the mandrel bent pipe is perfect. Our team installed the prototype to check fitment prior to final testing and everything went in like it was designed to do. Yes, the bumper must be removed to install this intake kit as well as to

With all our prototypes ready to rock and our vehicle at hand, it was time for testing day. Our team set to work strapping the vehicle down to the dyno and prepared to make some baseline runs on the stock setup. Luckily, we caught a day where the weather was agreeable and the vehicle was free of snow and salt.

Mishimoto Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S Performance Cold-Air Intake

With a general idea of our plans for this product, we set about removing all the necessary components so we could begin fabrication. Steve, one of our bright engineers, would be taking the helm for this particular project, with others lending a hand throughout the process when needed.

Our first task was to fabricate the main portion of the intake pipe. We would be using a separate piece to house the MAF and air straightener. This particular pipe routes air from the front bumper area into the engine compartment. We needed to decide on a pipe size and route that would provide the least restriction, greatest airflow, and most effective A/F ratios. Take a look!

Mishimoto Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S Performance Cold-Air Intake

These articles normally begin with a quick background of the vehicle in question, followed by some of the performance high points and pitfalls of the car. With this particular vehicle, this process is not necessary. If you are reading this, you probably already own a BRZ/FR-S, and/or you are well aware of the effect this vehicle has had on the automotive world. Autocross, track days, drifting, daily driving, even rally; the 86 has everything you need to really enjoy yourself behind the wheel in any setting. Mishimoto dove headfirst into the performance cooling market, releasing several innovative cooling products already well known for other chassis. Our current product list for the BRZ/FR-S includes a performance aluminum radiator, silicone radiator hose kit, direct-fit oil cooler kit, low-temperature thermostat, silicone induction hose,
